Introduction
First Artist's Journal Page
Pre-thinking
Honestly, I am not quite familiar with Art journal because I always think that art is painting or drawing or something else. At beginning, I was worried about the first assignment because I am not good at painting or drawing. When I searched for the internet about the art journal samples, there was an idea coming to my mind. Why don’t I use Chinese elements? Such as Chinese calligraphy, Chinese papercutting, and so on. Moreover, there are, as far as I know, few journal introducing Chinese arts, so I am going to add Chinese elements and to introduce Chinese arts. Viewers might like my cultures and feel interested in know something new and different from American style.

Process
I looked at some Chinese artist’s journals for reference, but some of them are simple and plain. (Chinese arts focus on simplicity but having meaningful ideas.) However, I was hoping that my pages are vividly designed. So firstly, I used a Chinese traditional notebook as an example. The enclosure of this notebook has delicate decorative button. Then I grab a pair of Chinese red button, using the papercutting work, drawing the outline in red, and painted yellow as the base color. (Red and yellow are the national colors in China.) The front cover which is very delicate so when viewers look at it, they’d like to open it quickly to see what it is inside. Inside pages, on the left page I wanted to introduce Papercutting so I used some vivid papercutting works and wrote an introduction to Papercutting. On the right page, I’d like to use text and image combined to commit my goals for the semester. I used Chinese calligraphy brush and ink, writing down the seal script which was the first united characters in ancient China. Then I draw the English meaning right on the words. In addition, I added the picture of Great Wall which I want to express my feeling of the first week of graduate life

Product
When you see the first page, it is not the traditional journal. It is like a notebook cover. You should unfasten the red button and then open the cover. When you open it, on the left page, it is fully vivid in the visual sense. On the right page, in the middle, it is the Chinese characters “宁静致远” in traditional type which means that having inner peace and then you could go far. On the top of left, it is a picture of the Great Wall. As you know, the length of Great Wall is 10,000 km. My graduate life just like the journey of climbing Great Wall. It is a long journey to fulfill my goals for the whole graduate life and I should work hard to achieve the goals even though it is very touch to climb the Grate Wall. There was a saying goes, the man who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man.

Prediction
I am not quite sure about Americans’ appetite, but I think people who are interested in Chinese cultures likely want to open the book and take a look. What’s more, this is a kind of new thing which people are not familiar with so they might be curious about these pages. Then they would stop and open the journal.

Narrative
Olivia, a new graduate student at college from Asia, was looking forward to taking advanced photography class in the beginning of the semester because that she had taken the basic one before and that she wanted to continue to learn more about photography. However, she needed the permission from the teacher to take this class because she was not majoring in photography. There was an interview for Olivia at the first class since the teacher did not know her. Little worried, she walked into the classroom. She seated in the back far from the teacher’s platform. The teacher did not notice her and he continued to talk about the syllabus of this class. She had a glance at the classroom and she found that her classmates knew each other very well. Since she seated far away from the teacher, she could not hear clearly what the teacher said. Her heart was beating fast when she looked at the requirement of this course. It was hard for her to achieve teacher’s expectation. Only by getting at least B in each course could she keep her research assistant position at college. However, she thought she were not able to get a B for the course when she read the rubric. Students were required to speak out their opinions and ideas, while Olivia usually was silent in the class. She felt frustrated to get used to the new life as a graduate student. When Olivia pondered her questions, the photography teacher asked students to introduce themselves. When it turned to Olivia, she felt nervous to speak out. She had no choice but introduced classmates and the teacher her name and major.
After class, Olivia talked to the photography teacher forwardly and she would love to learn more about photography. The teacher said, however, it was an advanced photography and he would not teach how to take pictures but to teach some photography philosophies and theories. He continuously said, some students from other departments thought this course would help them improve the shooting skills, on the contrary, students who took this class should acquire the photography skills first. This was a requirement. Olivia felt very scared when she heard the comments from the teacher, because the teacher’s words were like a warning to her. She had a negative experience in this first photography class.
Olivia did not catch the photography teacher’s requirement for assessing students clearly because undergraduate and graduate students were mixed in this class. The assessment for each group was ambiguous. For example, students were required to submit three photographers for daily topic discussion. The teacher did not clarify who can be the exception. Olivia’s desk mate, however, asserted that graduate students did not need to do those complicated assignments. What’s more, students are required to participate in the in class discussion, while most students had had basic photography theory experience to quo fast to express their thought. Olivia was not familiar with the proper terminology related to photography, resulting in a lost in the discussion. Every time, she was silent in the class, and the classmates ignored her as well as the teacher. She felt like she was a transparent person in the class. She was reluctant to take this class but she did not want to drop it, because each graduate student is required to take at least three courses in one semester. If she dropped the photography class, she would not have a choice to take the other one since the deadline of class enrollment was past. At the end, the vicious cycle was formatted. She did not like to take this class, and she felt isolated and she did not have a sense of belonging in this class.
Olivia’s advisor suggested her to talk with the photography teacher, however, she felt very worried to talk to the teacher because she did not want to be outstanding in the class. The advisor understood her feeling and respected her choice.
In the first critique of photography, Olivia showed her classmates and teacher a picture which was taken by her. It was a lovely girl with sadness and sorrow in the mirror. Olivia turned in her statement, it was a song lyrics.
There's a girl in my mirror
I wonder who she is
Sometimes I think I know her
Sometimes I really wish I did
But there's a story in her eyes
Lullabies and goodbyes
When she’s looking back at me
I can tell her heart is broken easily
Oh, the girl in my mirror
Is crying cause of something
And I wish there was something I could do
If I could I would tell her
Not to be afraid
The pain that she’s feeling
Of sense of loneliness will fade
So dry your tears and rest assured
Love’ll find your heart deeper
When she's looking back at me
I know nothing really works that easily
I can't believe it's what I see
And that the girl in the mirror
The girl in the mirror is ME.
Yes, the girl in the mirror is Olivia. And yes, Olivia is me. I feel depressed and frustrated in the class, and I do not know how to build the communication and connection with teacher and classmates. What’s more, I do not know how teachers assess me.
